Sabah JamalThe University of Texas at AustinMUN has given me the opportunity to learn more about issues around the world and the solutions different countries implement. It's amazing what the global community does and has given me perspective on how I want my career to help others. MUN has also improved my confidence and interpersonal skills.
My favorite MUN memories catching up with all the Dawson delegates during conference and hearing the craziness happening in everyone's room! It's especially great to see first-time delegates get excited about their work. |
At UT, I staffed the CTMUN conference! I was part of Crisis staff and got to create the crazy scenarios I had always enjoyed watching as a delegate!
Adith RamRice UniversityI think the biggest impact Model UN had on my worldview in high school was broadening my perspective beyond the US. I’ve thought about equitable healthcare for a while now, but researching the WHO for my committee my junior year really opened my eyes up to the deep disparities of health we face globally beyond just the US. Model UN helped give me a global perspective on global health, the issue I care about most right now and hope to contribute to somehow moving forward.
My favorite MUN memory was our mock conferences within our Dawson club my senior year. I remember one specific one that stands out involved advocacy for the legalization of all drugs (which I like to think I laid out a convincing argument for), and I loved how much fun I could have with my friends will feeling more prepared and confident for conference that year relative to my junior year. Seeing how many members we had at conference my senior year was really great too because the club I remember from my sophomore year was just a few kids meeting in Mr. Fahler’s class after school, not an LGI full of new faces like it was my senior year. |
While it’s not really similar as a club, my biggest college pursuit is somewhat related to MUN at least. I’m advocacy lead for the Rice chapter of a club called Partners in Health Engage that seeks to fundraiser for the global organization Partners in Health, build community awareness about global health disparities, and create advocacy campaigns for increased global health funding and equitable health legislation. While PIH Engage is more a college branch off of the global Partners in Health organization (which helps build community health infrastructure globally by supporting local healthcare workers and hospitals), I think MUN helped lead me to it by showing me the importance of global standards and policy, and also unfortunately the lack of singular authority and efficacy that many of us blindly confer to global organizations (such as the WHO, whose policies actually served as an initial roadblock in PIH’s Haiti health initiatives). I’m still deeply grateful though that MUN gave me further insight into the UN and functions of other global policy organizations, especially the flaws and limitations of these organizations and how to advocate for effective changes to their policies.
Teja MohankumarUniversity of Texas at AustinDawson Model UN has really helped me build my confidence! it also helped me actualize the world problems that we read about in the news everyday; sitting in a room with knowledgeable people who all have different ways to solve a topic gives us an insight into how global problems are dealt with, and it really taught me how many aspects there are to consider when trying to come up with a solution.
My favorite memory from MUN is definitely from HAMUN 2019! making new friends by passing notes on sticky notes during the conference and only knowing the person as their country are some of my favorite memories from MUN! |
